Herb Geary, Chief Nursing Officer - Cottage Health

Herb joined Cottage Health in 2006 and has been a dynamic leader and change agent in performance and quality improvement and leading the Magnet Journey.

In addition to the Chief Nursing Officer's responsibilities at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital and Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, Herb also oversees other departments including, Nutrition, Parish Nursing, Palliative Care, Education, Respiratory Care, Trauma, and Environmental Services. Herb is a strong advocate for professional advancement and seeking higher education for nursing and nurse leaders.

Herb Geary - Chief Nursing Officer

Cottage Health Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer

Herb is currently Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Cottage Health. Originally from New Hampshire, Herb received a Nursing Diploma from New Hampshire Hospital School of Nursing in Concord, NH. He moved to San Diego and held a number of progressive nursing leadership positions in various hospitals, most long standing at Scripps Memorial as the Clinical Manager of Orthopedics and Trauma for eight years. He completed his BS in Business and MBA while working at Alvarado Hospital, Kaiser - San Diego and Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. His favorite clinical experience was in Critical Care Nursing.

He moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1994 and quickly was appointed as Chief Nursing Officer of Good Samaritan Medical Center, Samaritan Health System, which later became Banner Health. Herb continued as the CNO at Good Sam until January 2006. Under Herb's leadership, Good Sam became a Magnet hospital in June 2005. Good Sam also applied for the Malcolm Baldrich Award for Quality and was chosen as one of the top seven hospitals in 2005 receiving a site visit for their Excellence in Bone Marrow Transplant program.
