Understanding My Bill

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why am I getting a bill?

Cottage Health submits a claim to your insurance company and bills you for the portion not covered by insurance. For more details, see the explanation of benefits provided by your insurance.

We may not have correct insurance information. Please contact the Customer Service Department at 805- 879-8900 to update your information. In addition, your insurance company may need additional information from you. Please answer all requests from your insurance company as quickly as you can.

When will I receive my bill?

Insured Patients
Cottage Health works with your insurance company to ensure your claim is paid. After all other resources for payment have been exhausted, you will be billed for the remainder, per your insurance policy.

If you have not received a bill after 30 days, please contact our Customer Service Department at 805-879-8900.

Uninsured Patients

Self-pay patients will receive a bill soon after treatment. We will require a deposit before services are rendered.

Cottage Health offers financial assistance for uninsured patients who meet specific income guidelines. Please call 805-879-8900 to determine if you qualify. For more information, please visit our financial assistance page.

How is my balance calculated?

Your balance is determined by your insurance coverage. The balance may include a co-payment, deductible or co-insurance. It is extremely important that you become familiar with your insurance policy and benefits. For questions or concerns about your balance, please review your explanation of benefits and contact your insurance company directly.

When is my co-payment/deductible due?

Deductibles, co-payments and deposits are due when services are provided. If you have questions about any of these, contact the Admitting Department at 805- 682-7111, Ext. 53688.

Why am I receiving multiple bills for the same service date?

Your hospital bill only includes charges for hospital services, such as your room, nursing, equipment, pharmacy items, ancillary services and supplies. Each physician bills separately according to their hourly fees for supervision, interpretation or consultation. This may include emergency physicians, radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, assistant surgeons and consulting physicians.

Cottage Health is unable to answer questions about ambulance or physician billing. Please contact them directly for questions or to make payment arrangements.

What is the Cottage Health Payment Policy?

Once all payment options have been exhausted, you will receive a first statement, a summary of services rendered. If you would like an itemized statement, reflecting each supply, medication and service, contact our Customer Service Department at 805-879-8900.

Full payment is due when this statement is received. As a courtesy, the hospital will send two additional statements. If you are unable to pay your balance in full, please contact the Customer Service Department to make arrangements. You can request an interest-free payment plan for up to six months. We can also arrange interest-bearing payment plans for longer periods.

How do I know when my claim is paid?

Your insurance company will send you an explanation of benefits (EOB). This will explain the insurance company’s payment, any contractual adjustments and your financial responsibility, which is determined by your insurance company. Keep all EOBs for your records. If you have not received an EOB after thirty days, contact your insurance company.

The hospital will act as your billing agent and will submit a claim to your insurance company.

In addition to your hospital bill, you may also receive separate bills from your physician, anesthesiologist, radiologist and other specialists. Please make any billing inquiries directly to these providers. See Physician Billing (below) for more information.

You will be billed after all other payment options have been exhausted. You are responsible for paying all hospital bills.

Cottage Health does not bill third-party automobile insurance, homeowner insurance or any other type of third party or personal injury insurance. The patient is responsible for paying the claim. A patient/guarantor can request a copy of their bill by contacting our Customer Service Department at 805- 879-8900 to facilitate reimbursement from a third-party insurance.

Physician Billing

Your medical bill includes both hospital and physician fees. Cottage Health does not employ physicians; however, physician groups provide emergency, radiology, pathology and anesthesia services and bill separately from the hospital. Some physician groups may not be contracted with a patient’s insurance company.

Cottage Health encourages physician groups to participate in the same contracts we use. However, hospitals cannot obligate physician groups to contract with any insurance company. Cottage Health is unable to assist patients with any contractual disputes with a physician’s billing service.
