Coast Caregiver Resource Center Receives Grant to Provide Caregiver Respite, Counseling and Support Groups in San Luis Obispo County

Santa Barbara, Calif. – Coast Caregiver Resource Center, a program of Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital, has received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County. This grant will leverage additional funds from the Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens, Area Agency on Aging, to provide 250 hours of caregiver respite and 100 hours of caregiver counseling and support group for 25 unpaid caregivers in San Luis Obispo County.

Caring for a loved one with a cognitive disorder or other disabling condition forever changes the lives of family caregivers. There can be devastating effects on those providing long term care at home. Family and friend caregivers of dependent adults are often the invisible linchpins who make it possible for a disabled adult to receive care at home rather than in an institution. Many of these family members and friends have been providing care at home for years, and many of them are also elderly or have injuries or chronic illness that are exacerbated by the demands of caregiving. Family caregivers are at much higher risk for stress related medical and mental health problems, and for severe medical issues, and even death, than their non-caregiving peers. Family caregivers often focus on the care recipient’s well-being over their own and that is a barrier to seeking respite, counseling and caregiver support groups. Because of fixed or reduced incomes, many family/friend caregivers lack funds to pay for services, even when additional support is crucial to the caregiver’s health and well-being.

The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County is a public trust which meets the changing needs and interests of the community. For more information on SLOCCF or any funds, call 543-2323 or log onto
