Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is the largest private teaching hospital on the California coast between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. With Graduate Medical Education programs in surgery, radiology, pediatrics and internal medicine, we care for diverse patient populations in both outpatient clinics and hospital settings.

Healthcare Education Loan Program

Current Employees

Through our Healthcare Education Loan Program, employees can obtain their next degree at little or no cost to themselves. The Healthcare Education Loan program provides financial support to current employees of Cottage Health in conjunction with earning a degree in one of the following areas:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy/Care (BSRT)
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) or other related field, based on organizational need
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)

Non-Employees

The Healthcare Education Loan program also provides financial support to non-employees (external candidates) attending school on a full-time basis, living in the Tri-County area, in conjunction with earning the following degrees:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) through Santa Barbara City College
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) through California State University Channel Islands
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) through Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital School of Medical Technology or California State University Channel Islands

Other Education Goals

Based on your education goals, you may qualify for loans up to the following amounts:

  • Associate Degree Program (ADN) up to $5,000
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) up to $10,000
  • Bachelor’s Degree Program (BSN) up to $7,500
  • Cal State University Channel Islands at Cottage Health System BSN Program up to $12,000
  • Master’s Degree Program (MSN) up to $6,000

The approved loan amount plus the interest may be cancelled if, upon graduation, you are employed for service as a full-time or part-time benefited registered nurse, or clinical laboratory scientist (CLS), at any Cottage Health facility. Loan repayment for service begins following completion of the new certificate or degree. Service requirement for loan repayment is one hour for each dollar borrowed. For example, if $4,000 is borrowed the loan will be fully repaid after 4,000 hours worked as a regular full-time or part-time benefits eligible employee.

Cottage Health Professional Institute

The heart of the Health Professionals Institute (HPI) has been described as growing infinite potential in employees while developing internal talent. In existence for more than 10 years, HPI looks to develop Cottage Health employees by offering staff the opportunity to learn the skills and principles of effective leadership at Cottage. The program includes instructional courses as well as opportunities to put new skills into practice, culminating in a final capstone project and celebratory graduation ceremony.

Clinical Education Development

Certification Bonuses and Tuition Reimbursement

At Cottage Health, you’ll be rewarded for your accomplishments for professional milestones. Certification bonuses are available to incumbents in senior licensed, certified or difficult to recruit positions in clinical or medical job classifications. Cottage Health provides up to $1,000 for each nationally recognized initial certification received and $500 for re-certification.

All active regular full- and part-time eligible Cottage employees working in an eligible clinical position for the last six consecutive calendar months are eligible. Ask your Cottage Health recruiter for more details.

In addition to certification bonuses, Cottage Health offers regular full-time or part-time benefited employees tuition reimbursement for the cost of classes and books required for approved educational courses, conferences, CEUs or degree programs up to $1,000 a year for full-time or $750 for part-time.

Education Assistance Program

The Education Assistance Program provides financial support to benefit-eligible employees who are actively pursuing further education in a degree program at an accredited college or university for licensed patient care positions in the areas of nursing and clinical laboratory science. The program is available to employees who receive a recommendation from their immediate supervisor and are accepted into a qualifying degree program.
