This multidisciplinary, online seminar will explore the complex context surrounding the topic of child abuse and neglect, and discuss tools for assessment and intervention. The first lecture will explore opioid use in pregnancy and discuss state policies for treating prenatal substance use as neglect.
The second hour will focus on domestic violence, its effects on children, strategies for communicating with children who have witnessed domestic violence, and the available community services. The target audience is anyone who works with children in the healthcare system or the community.
- Summarize the impact of the opioid crisis on children
- Examine child abuse case reporting through a health equity lens
- Review the role of healthcare professionals in preventing child abuse among families affected by substance use disorder
- Review the impacts of domestic violence on the family system during and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic
- Apply strategies to screen and intervene for domestic violence
