“I realized I could go anywhere for my health. Fortunately the top medical care was right here in Goleta at Cottage.”
- Maggie Cote, RN
After a total hip replacement, Maggie is trekking again.
Maggie Cote began her healthcare career as a nurse at Cottage Health in 1979, providing frontline patient care for three decades.
She’s passionate about hiking and enjoying the outdoors, but last year her hip began to hurt. “I had a ‘hitch in my get along,’ so to speak,” Maggie said. “My hip began cramping; I tried injections at first, but the pain got worse.” The pain was slowing her down, keeping her from fully enjoying all the activities she loved.
Maggie needed a total hip replacement, and it was time to make a decision. Where would she go for it? “I realized I would go anywhere for my health,” Maggie said. “Fortunately, the top medical care was right here at Cottage. I could stay close to home.” “It’s interesting to be on the other side, being a patient,” Maggie said. “From the very start, when I walked through the doors the day of my surgery, I knew I was in great hands.”
In May, 2019, Maggie had a total hip replacement at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital performed by Dr. Bryan Emmerson from the Cottage Center for Orthopedics. Just a few hours after surgery, a physical therapist assisted her as she took a few steps – already walking with her new hip.
Maggie set a goal for herself: “Get back on the mountain.” She began counting the days until she could return to hiking without hip pain. Maggie was encouraged by her recovery time and noticed remarkable improvements every couple of months.
Then, only five months after surgery, Maggie returned to the mountains of Yosemite – hiking 5 to 10 miles a day through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. She was back to the life she loved.
“I’m so grateful for the care I received at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital,” Maggie said. “The staff was professional, courteous and fun – everything you’d ever want from a health care team.”
