Carlyle’s Second Chance

Carlyle Eubank

Carlyle, grateful patient

Carlyle has spent most of his life under the wide-open skies of the Santa Ynez Valley—working the land, running his art business, and raising a family. But one quiet evening, everything changed in an instant.

“I was just lying on the couch watching TV,” Carlyle recalls. “Next thing I knew, I was on the floor. I couldn’t move my right side at all.”

It was a stroke. No warning. No time to waste.

What saved him wasn't luck. It was fast, expert care—just minutes away from him at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital.

Thanks to the donor-supported stroke readiness program, Carlyle received clot-busting medication within the narrow window when it could still work. That treatment saved his life.

From there, he was transferred to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for specialized stroke care, followed by weeks of intensive therapy at Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital. Every day was a fight—to walk, speak, and reclaim the life he loved.

“They worked my tail off,” Carlyle laughs. “But that’s what brought me back.”

Today, Carlyle is back to his art business, helping on the ranch, and embracing a healthier lifestyle. He’s lost 35 pounds, made lasting changes, and shares his story with one urgent message:

This could happen to anyone. And when it does, minutes matter.

I didn't realize how close I came to something terrible, Carlyle says. But the care I received made all the difference.

Carlyle’s recovery is a testament to the power of coordinated care—and to the generosity of donors who make it possible. From emergency response to rehabilitation, every step of his journey was supported by philanthropic gifts to Cottage Health.

Your support ensures that lifesaving care remains close to home—for you and your loved ones.

Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital is part of the only 16% of rural hospitals nationwide with a certified stroke unit. But maintaining that level of care isn’t guaranteed. It takes ongoing investment in training, equipment, and rapid-response protocols.
