Mammograms are a woman’s best defense in detecting breast cancer early, but we know that the fear of pain causes many women to delay scheduling their annual mammogram.
That’s why Cottage Health proudly offers the Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam that combines better, earlier breast cancer detection with the improved comfort of the SmartCurve™ breast stabilization system.
More Accurate. More Comfortable.
Getting a mammogram with the SmartCurve™ system is just like getting a regular Genius™ exam – only more comfortable!
The curved design of the compression device mirrors the shape of a woman’s breast to reduce pinching and applies uniform compression over the entire breast for added comfort.
The technologist will view the images of your breasts at the computer workstation to ensure quality images have been captured for review. A radiologist will then examine the images and report results to either your physician or directly to you.
How a 3D Mammogram™ Works
Genius™ 3D Mammography™ Scan
Women will see little difference between a conventional 2D mammogram and a 3D mammogram™. The exam takes about the same amount of time – a 3.7 second scan time - and the positioning is the same. The real difference is in the information available to the doctor.
A good analogy for 3D Mammography™ is like thinking of the pages in a book. If you look down at the cover you cannot see all of the pages – but when you open it up, you can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers.
What to Expect During Your Exam
A Genius 3D Mammography™ exam is very similar to a traditional mammogram. Just as with a digital mammogram, the technologist will position you, compress your breast under a paddle and take images from different angles. A Genius exam may be used as a screening tool in conjunction with a traditional digital mammogram or may be used by itself for a diagnostic mammogram.
During the Genius part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in just seconds. Your doctor is then able to view your breast tissue in one millimeter layers. Instead of viewing all the complexities of your breast tissue in one flat image, the doctor can examine the tissue one page or “slice” at a time.
There is no additional compression required with Genius exam, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view. The technologist will view the images at a computer workstation to ensure adequate images have been captured for review by a radiologist, who studies them and reports results to either your physician or directly to you.
The Genius™ Exam and Breast Density
Dense breast tissue can make it difficult for doctors to detect breast cancer during annual screenings, which is concerning since women with dense breasts are more likely to develop breast cancer.
Studies show that the Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam has greater accuracy than 2D mammography for women across a variety of ages and breast densities. It is the only mammogram that is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.
This is good news for patients, as nearly fifty percent of women between the ages of 40 and 74 have dense breasts.
