Authorization or Use of Protected Health Information
This policy establishes guidelines for procedures to use and disclose the protected health information (PHI) of research participants, as defined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule. Use and disclosure of PHI for research purposes requires prior approval from the Santa Barbara Cottage Health Institutional Review Board (SBCH IRB).

Investigator Responsibility
This policy details SBCH IRB’s human subjects research requirements for investigators. In addition to information contained in SBCH IRB’s policies, this policy is a guideline to investigators regarding some of the basic requirements related to human subjects research.

Conflicts of Interest in Research (COIR)
This policy promotes the highest ethical standards in situations where conflicts of interest may occur in the conduct of research. It establishes conflict of interest rules to regulate the disclosure and avoidance of conflicts of interest in research, a uniform mechanism for determining when a potential or actual conflict of interest exists, management responsibilities for potential or actual conflicts of interests, and communicates the standards for conflict of interest in research to individuals and institutions involved in research.
