Trauma Facts & Figures
In 2014, the hospitals of Cottage Health saw 60,000 emergency visits. There were approximately 38,600 emergency department visits at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and 1,515 patients initiated a full trauma center response. Of those, 994 were admitted to the hospital. Many critically ill patients who were not expected to live did survive, under the care of the SBCH trauma team.
Trauma Services are fully integrated with SBCH’s Critical Care Services, which include adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care units.
SBCH is also a trauma research facility, making significant contributions to the emergency medicine field.
The Center’s continuous quality assessment and performance improvement program is coordinated with trauma research, and includes:
- Trauma rounds
- Weekly trauma charts review
- Multidisciplinary performance review committee
- Trauma registry
- Trauma outcomes benchmarked with a national trauma database of Level I and II trauma centers
