Early Detection and Treatment of Osteoporosis
The DEXA imaging technology provides advanced diagnostic imaging tools to support early detection and treatment of osteoporosis—a disease that weakens your bones when bone mass is lost, and changes occur in the structure of bone tissue. The National Institutes of Health defines osteoporosis as a “silent” disease because most people do not have symptoms and may not even know they have the disease until they break a bone or suffer from an injury. Osteoporosis is the main cause of fractures in postmenopausal women and in older men.
During the DEXA scan, measurements are typically made of the lower spine and upper part of the hip. A DEXA test can detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs and can estimate your risk of having a fracture in the future, as well as identify others who might benefit from measures to improve bone strength.
DEXA enables new dimensions in care and generates the crisp, clear, high-resolution images you need to accurately assess bone density.
Who Should Get DEXA Testing
Talk to your primary care physician about bone mineral density testing with DEXA, especially if you fall into one of these categories:
- Women aged 65 years or older and men aged 70 years or older
- Men and postmenopausal women ages 50-69 years, based on risk factor profile
- Men and postmenopausal women aged 50 years or older who have had an adult-age fracture.
