Appointments and Referrals

Patients generally need to be referred to Interventional Radiologists by their primary care physician or a specialist such as an oncologist, neurosurgeon, obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN), nephrologist or other. For more information call 805-682-7111.

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that uses image-guided minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions and diseases, many of which once required traditional surgery.

Small devices such as guidewires and thin, flexible tubes called catheters are used along with live imaging to treat conditions within the body’s blood vessels and organs.

Interventional radiologists at Cottage Health are highly trained and have completed fellowships in their specialty, and they are assisted by a team of interventional technologists and nurses to provide uncompromising care for patients.

Diagnosis and Treatments

Patients are referred to interventional radiology care for many reasons, including:

  • Urology for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), to embolize and shrink the prostate for more normal urine flow
  • Oncology for port-a-cath placement, for chemotherapy treatment and/or palliative care
  • OB-GYN for the treatment of uterine fibroids, through arterial embolization to shrink fibroids and relieve symptoms such as heavy or painful menstrual periods
  • Trauma care to stop bleeding
