Waves of Empowerment
Waves of Empowerment – Jesse Billauer
Jesse Billauer was one of the top junior surfers in the world, a month away from turning pro, when he got thrown headfirst into a sandbar. The impact broke his sixth vertebrae, and he instantly became a quadriplegic. Today Jesse is happily married, the father of two young children, and an Adapted Surfing World Champion. He is an inspiration and example of when dreams and medical rehabilitation team up together, the impossible can become possible.
‘‘When you don’t give up, you cannot fail. Your power is in your perspective, not your circumstance.” Jesse’s inspiring and powerful message and his honesty, courage, and outlook on life touched the audience, which included many former Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital patients and families.
The Empowerment through Medical Rehabilitation Educational Series is supported by the Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation and its volunteer board, which provides support for the Hospital’s programs and services. Generous event sponsors included: The Gretler Foundation, Katina Zaninovich, Central Coast Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Karen Hickman, Ashley Parker Snider, and Tariq and Maxine Kadri. Supporters included Bernzott Capital Advisors, and Fess Parker Winery. Lailan McGrath is the Chair of the Event Committee and Danielle Kent is the Chair of the Board of Directors
“On March 25, 1996, a morning like any other Malibu morning, I became a quadriplegic. While I obviously don’t celebrate that life- changing moment, I DO celebrate every day, month and year after it.”
– Jesse Billauer, ISA World Champion, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals
