One in eight women will be told she has breast cancer during her lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. But when breast cancer is found early, the survival rate is 98 percent.
Mammography (breast X-rays) can help doctors see breast cancer before you notice changes. The Breast Care Center offers digital mammography, which quickly provides crisp, clear images to pinpoint cancer in its earliest stages.
Breast ultrasound provides another way of viewing breast tissue, without X-rays. Ultrasound can be helpful for follow-up after a mammogram, and for women with dense breasts.
If we suspect breast cancer, we can use imaging tools to help take a sample of cells for testing without having to do surgery. We offer several choices for image-guided breast biopsy.
Ultrasound-guided needle biopsy uses ultrasound imaging to help locate the suspicious spot. Stereotactic biopsy uses X-rays or ultrasound as well as a special probe. And in some cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can better show the target area.
Helping Cancer Patients “Without Walls”
For those facing a breast cancer diagnosis, our cancer team, based at Cottage Center for Oncology, is ready with the experts, technology and experienced care that you need.
Since 1976, Cottage Health has held accreditation as a teaching hospital cancer program from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (ACOS).
In more recent years, we joined with local surgeons, cancer specialists, radiologists, pathologists and plastic surgeons to create a “breast center without walls.” The Santa Barbara Breast Care Alliance (SBBCA) puts patients first with professionals working together to give seamless care.
